- SOLAR SYSTEM
-
- Our planetary system and its centre star, the Sun, form the Solar system. Nine planets circle the Sun: Mercury, Venus,
- Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, in order from the Sun outwards. The planets may have one or
- several circling bodies of their own, called moons. Their number exceeds 60. New small moons are to be found every
- now and then. (1999 three new ones.)
- In addition to the planets, the Sun is circled by thousands of asteroids, whose orbits lie mostly between Mars and
- Jupiter, in the so-called asteroid belt.
- The Sun is also circled by a large number of comets, 900 of which are known and many new ones are found every year.
- The orbits of the comets are very elongated, and the furthest edge of the orbit is far beyond the planetary orbits.
- Meteors are even smaller circling bodies, which mostly burn up when penetrating the Earth's atmosphere. The
- phenomenon is also known as a shooting star.
